"*1941 in Munich, Germany. Lives in Hamburg, Germany. Following a short episode when she worked as a pianist, Hanne Darboven began studying painting. Influenced by Minimalism in the late 1960s, she created geometric drawings on graph paper, and later, mathematic calculations, in which she ascertained the sum of particular calendar dates. Darboven invented different ways of designing ordered systems—using calendars, copying literature and scientific texts, combining images, postcards, and photography with columns of numbers or lines of writing—and has been presenting them in large installations since 1971. Analogous to her “mathematical literature,” at the end of the 1970s Darboven began creating “mathematical music,” in which she transposed numerical structures into musical notation. After documenta 5, 6, and 7 presented individual works by Darboven, Documenta11 will show examples from all stages of her ouevre: her books (Poems: 4 x 136 Wunschkonzert, 1984), installations, her music in concert (Sextet for Strings, opus 44, 1998/99), and a selection of films.
*1941 in München, Deutschland. Lebt in Hamburg, Deutschland. Nach einer kurzen Episode als Pianistin studierte Hanne Darboven Malerei. Ende der sechziger Jahre kam sie in Kontakt mit Künstlern der Minimal Art und es entstanden geometrische konstruktionsartige Zeichnungen auf Millimeterpapier. Im Folgenden stellte Darboven mathematische Rechnungen auf, wie die Ermittlung der Quersummen von Kalenderdaten. Darboven nutzte unterschiedliche Ordnungsmodelle, zum Beispiel Kalendarien, sie schrieb dem Literatur und wissenschaftliche Texte ab und kombinierte Bilder, Ansichtskarten und Fotografien mit Zahlenkolonnen oder Schriftzeilen, die seit 1971 in raumfüllenden Installationen präsentiert werden. Darboven hat analog zu ihrer „mathematischen Literatur“ eine „mathematische Musik“ geschaffen, in der sie Zahlenkonstruktionen in musikalische Notationen überführt. Nachdem Hanne Darboven auf der documenta 5, 6, und 7 mit Einzelarbeiten vertreten war, wird die Documenta11 die gesamte Bandbreite ihres Schaffens exemplarisch repräsentieren: ihre Bücher (Poems: 4 x 136 Wunschkonzert, 1984), Rauminstallationen und Filme und, als konzertante Aufführung, ihre Musik (Sextett für Streicher, opus 44, 1998/99)."
